Podiatry for Kids

During their developmental years, children go through similar injuries, pains and problems. However, not all children grow and develop at the same rate or in the same way. This makes it tricky as a parent to know when pain is a problem or simply a developmental change.

Our children's podiatry specialists help parents understand what is normal, what needs attention and what steps to take. No referral is needed.

Four Key Areas We Help Parents With

Our children's podiatry service focuses on four specific areas of concern that parents most commonly bring to us. Each area is assessed individually with your child's age, activity level and development in mind.

Assessing Future Risk

Looking at whether your child is at risk of a foot, knee or hip issue in the future due to flat or unstable feet.

Growing Pains

Assessing pain developed as a result of growth plates not fusing with the bone, commonly seen in the heel and below the knee cap between ages 7-14.

Strength & Walking Training

Providing strength, balance and walking training when a child needs to change their biomechanics due to poor movement patterns.

Footwear Guidance

Helping parents save money by providing a clear footwear blueprint so they can spend appropriately on the right shoes for their kids.

Contributing Factors

Common Conditions We Treat in Children

Children can experience a wide range of foot and leg issues. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent more serious problems later and keep your child active and confident.

01
Flat feet and high arches
02
In-toeing (pigeon toes) and out-toeing (duck feet)
03
Knock knees and bow legs
04
Growing pains (heel and knee pain)
05
Heel pain (Sever's disease)
06
Ankle instability and frequent sprains
07
Ingrown toenails and warts
08
Curly toes and toe walking
09
Hypermobility and joint instability
10
Early-stage bunions
Our Assessment Process

Every child receives a tailored assessment that considers their age, development and activity level. We look at the whole picture, not just the feet, to understand how their body is moving and developing.

  • Gait analysis - how your child walks and runs
  • Foot structure and joint mobility assessment
  • Muscle strength and flexibility testing
  • Posture and alignment evaluation

Book a growth check during rapid development periods

2

Choose supportive shoes appropriate for your child's age

3

Encourage varied physical activity across different sports

4

Watch for limping, reluctance to play or complaints of pain

5

Address concerns early rather than waiting to see if they grow out of it

6

Maintain regular stretching routines for active children

Consultation Fees & Rebates

No referral is needed for your child's podiatry appointment. Our clinics accept most private health rebates, Medicare (with eligible referrals), TAC and WorkCover. Contact us to discuss your best options.

Frequently Asked Questions

There is no minimum age. If you have concerns about how your child walks, stands or complains of pain in their feet, legs or knees, it is worth having them assessed. We commonly see children from toddler age through to teenagers.
Every child develops differently, which can make it hard to judge. Signs to watch for include persistent limping, reluctance to participate in physical activity, frequent tripping, complaints of pain and visible differences between the two feet or legs. A professional assessment can give you clarity.
Not every child needs orthotics. We assess each child individually and only recommend them when they are likely to benefit. Other treatments like exercises, footwear changes and gait training may be sufficient depending on the condition.
Many children have flat feet as part of normal development, particularly before age 6. However, if flat feet persist beyond this age, cause pain or affect how your child moves, a professional assessment is recommended to determine if treatment is needed.
No referral is needed. You can book directly with Melbourne Sports Podiatry at our Brighton, Richmond or South Melbourne clinics.
