Distance Running Podiatry
Specialised podiatry care for distance runners, from park runners to ultramarathon athletes. Our sports podiatrists understand the repetitive loading demands of running and provide targeted treatment to keep you training consistently.
Distance running is one of the highest-load activities for the feet and lower limbs. With each stride generating forces of two to three times your body weight, even small biomechanical inefficiencies can lead to overuse injuries over time. The repetitive nature of running means that most injuries develop gradually rather than from a single event.
Whether you are starting your first 5K program or training for an ultramarathon, we focus on identifying the root cause of your injury rather than just treating symptoms, so you can return to running with confidence.

Common Running Foot & Lower Limb Injuries
Running injuries are almost always related to load, whether that's too much volume, too rapid an increase, or biomechanical factors that concentrate stress on particular structures. Our podiatrists frequently treat the following conditions in runners.
Plantar Fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common conditions we see in runners. Pain under the heel or through the arch typically develops gradually and is often worse with the first steps in the morning. We address contributing factors including calf tightness, foot mechanics, training load, and footwear, using a combination of manual therapy, exercises, and orthotics where appropriate.
Achilles Tendinopathy
The Achilles tendon absorbs enormous load during running, and tendinopathy can develop when that load exceeds the tendon's capacity. We prescribe evidence-based progressive loading programs (such as isometric and eccentric exercises) alongside assessment of footwear, running technique, and training patterns to restore tendon health.
Shin Splints (Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome)
Shin splints present as pain along the inside border of the shin and are common when runners increase their mileage or change surfaces. We differentiate shin splints from more serious conditions like stress fractures, then address contributing factors including foot posture, calf strength, and training load progression.
Stress Fractures (Tibial & Metatarsal)
Stress fractures occur when bone is loaded beyond its capacity to repair. In runners, the tibia and metatarsals are most commonly affected. Early diagnosis is important, as continuing to run on a stress fracture can lead to a complete fracture. We assess risk factors, arrange appropriate imaging, and develop a structured return-to-running plan.
Our Treatment Approach
We understand that runners want to keep running whenever possible. Our treatment plans are designed to maintain your fitness where safe to do so, while addressing the underlying cause of your injury.
