Cricket Podiatry

Cricket places distinct demands on the feet and lower limbs depending on your role. Fast bowlers absorb forces of up to seven times their body weight at front foot contact, while batsmen and fielders require explosive lateral movement and prolonged periods of standing. These varied demands create a broad range of injury profiles.

We work with cricketers across club, representative, and elite levels. Our podiatrists understand the specific biomechanical stresses of bowling, batting, and fielding, and provide targeted treatment plans to keep you on the pitch throughout the season.

Common Cricket Foot & Ankle Injuries

Cricket injuries often relate to the repetitive nature of bowling and the high forces involved in fast bowling in particular. Our podiatrists are experienced in diagnosing and managing the following conditions in cricketers.

Stress Fractures (Fast Bowlers)

Stress fractures, particularly of the metatarsals and navicular, are a significant concern for fast bowlers. The repetitive impact of the bowling action, combined with high training volumes, can overload bone tissue. We assess contributing factors including bowling technique, footwear, training load, and foot biomechanics, then guide you through a structured return to bowling.

Ankle Sprains

Ankle sprains can occur during fielding, running between wickets, or when bowling on uneven surfaces. We provide rehabilitation programs focused on restoring range of motion, strength, and proprioception, along with taping or bracing strategies for return to play.

Plantar Fasciitis

Long days in the field and repetitive bowling run-ups can lead to plantar fasciitis. Standing on hard outfields for extended periods adds to the load on the plantar fascia. We treat this with a combination of manual therapy, load management, orthotics, and targeted exercises.

Sesamoiditis

The sesamoid bones beneath the big toe joint can become inflamed due to the push-off forces during bowling and batting. Sesamoiditis causes localised pain under the ball of the foot and can be slow to settle without proper management. We use offloading techniques, footwear modifications, and activity modification to allow healing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Stress fractures typically present as a gradual onset of pain that worsens with bowling and eases with rest. If you have localised foot pain that is getting worse over time, it's important to have it assessed early. We can arrange imaging if a stress fracture is suspected.
In many cases, yes, with the right management plan. We can help you modify your training load, use orthotics or taping to reduce symptoms, and prescribe exercises to address the underlying issue while you continue to play.
Not all fast bowlers need orthotics, but they can be beneficial for those with biomechanical factors that increase injury risk. We assess each bowler individually and only prescribe orthotics when they are likely to make a meaningful difference.
Return to bowling after a stress fracture typically takes 8 to 12 weeks, depending on the location and severity. We follow a graduated return-to-bowling program with clear benchmarks at each stage to ensure safe return to full bowling loads.
